The Google Business Profile Checklist for Ranking in the Local Map Pack
Ranking in Google's Map Pack isn't about one setting - it's a handful of ongoing habits. Here's the checklist we run for every client.
The Map Pack - the block of three local listings Google shows above the regular search results - gets the majority of clicks for local searches. Ranking there isn't about a single trick; it's a set of ongoing habits Google rewards over time.
Profile setup
- Choose the most specific primary category available, not the broadest one
- Fill in every relevant attribute (services offered, payment types, accessibility)
- Use your real business name - no keyword-stuffed variants, which breach Google's guidelines and risk suspension
- Set an accurate service area if you don't have walk-in customers
Ongoing signals
- Post weekly - offers, recent jobs, seasonal updates
- Respond to every review within a few days, positive or negative
- Upload new geotagged photos regularly rather than one batch at launch
- Keep hours, phone number and address perfectly consistent across your website and every directory
What actually moves the needle
Review volume and recency tend to matter more than almost anything else for local businesses. A steady stream of new reviews, responded to promptly, does more for Map Pack visibility than most technical tweaks.
